Grading System

We will be using a point system. To calculate grades, divide the total points accumulated by the total points possible and multiply by 100.

Homework will be worth 10 points a week

Quizzes will be worth between 10 to 30 points

Unit tests will be worth approximately 100 points

Science Notebooks will be worth between 300-400 points (that averages to between 50% to 60% of the final grade)

Science Notebook

Notebooks and homework make up the bulk of the nine weeks grade. AMSTI only provides a classroom set of textbooks, so the notebook will contain everything students need to succeed in science.

Homework Options

Each Monday I will send home an assignment sheet for the week. Please tear off the strip at the bottom, sign it, and send it back on Tuesday. Returning that signed strip is worth two points. Each student does any two of the homework options and turns them in on Friday. Each assignment is worth four points, for a grand total of ten points per week. Homework sheets will be posted here in case anyone needs a fresh copy.

Homework Pointers and Tips

Written assignments should be in the student's own words, I will not accept reports that are printed directly off the internet. I won't nitpick spelling and grammar if I can read and understand what the student writes. Please help your child by discussing what they are going to write and let them explain it to you before they write it down. This helps with reading comprehension, retention, and writing skills. Reports can be typed or hand written as long as they are reasonably neat and readable.

Poster and art projects do not have to be done on large poster boards. One large sheet of poster paper could be cut in half or fourths and used for several assignments. Another option might be to use the larger sizes of construction paper. Unless I specify otherwise, the poster only has to be bigger than a sheet of typing paper.

Creativity is much more important (and impressive!) than spending money on store bought borders and scrap booking materials. Crayons, colored pencils, construction paper, tape and glue are typical art supplies that could be used for homework projects.
